Using Car Time for Connection
According to a report by AAA, Americans spend a cumulative of 70 billion hours driving each year, which is up nearly 10% over the past decade. The average American spends 51 minutes per day driving, and we all know that many, many Houstonians spend much longer than that behind the wheel.
This ample amount of time provides an excellent opportunity for fun and meaningful discussions with loved ones. When your child(ren) are in the car, they are a captive audience set up to experience deeper connection through conversation. Consider using the following prompts to open conversation:
Joys and Sorrows: Share a high and a recent low from that day.
Nature Gratitude: Discuss something in nature that you have witnessed recently.
Acknowledgements: Express gratitude to someone present for something positive they have done recently.
Silly Questions: Consider fantastical ideas to get a peak into each other’s minds. For example…
What would squirrels say if they could talk?
What pet would you want to have if you could have any animal as a pet?
What super power would you want to have and why?
